Compare kWh before dollars
A higher amount due can come from more energy, a higher price, a longer billing period, or all three. Compare average kWh per day across similar months before focusing on equipment.
Cooling combines power and runtime
Hotter weather increases both the temperature difference across the building and the number of compressor hours. Humidity can extend runtime even when the thermostat setting is unchanged.
Check the system and the building
Restricted filters, dirty coils, duct leakage, direct sun, attic heat, air leakage, and failing equipment can all increase cooling energy.
- Check filter condition and airflow.
- Review thermostat schedules and overrides.
- Compare daily kWh with outdoor temperature.
- Have persistent icing or comfort problems diagnosed.
Do not overlook other summer loads
Pool pumps, dehumidifiers, portable air conditioners, irrigation pumps, extra refrigeration, and EV charging during travel-heavy months can contribute to the same bill.
